A natural next step
You don't need to rebuild your routine to explore western riding.

The Clear Rein Western Track is designed to work alongside the Clear Rein System and the 12-month Planner you already have. It adds a western pathway to your training rather than asking you to abandon the structure you know.

The Western Planner Swap connects the western lessons and patterns to your existing plan, helping you find the relevant resource for each session.

Why the Western Track

Western training, with a plan behind it.

A connected collection of lessons and exercises to help you organise your sessions, understand what to practise, and recognise when a movement is becoming consistent.

01

Start with the foundations

Work through western tack, saddle fit, seat, split reins, stopping, steering, the walk and the jog.

02

Develop skills progressively

Follow structured lessons with practical steps, common mistakes and clear criteria for progress.

03

Put the lessons into practice

Use 36 schooling patterns in the arena, over trail obstacles and in ranch-style settings.

04

Know what to look for

Observe the quality of the work and use the stated success criteria to assess readiness to progress.

05

Keep your existing Planner

The Western Planner Swap shows how the new resources fit into your existing 12-month training plan.

06

Make each session purposeful

Use clear objectives and defined routes to give your schooling sessions direction and structure.

What's included

Four resources.
One connected system.

The Western Track brings together two training modules, a collection of schooling patterns and a guide to using them with your existing Planner.

00
Your starting point

The Western Planner Swap

A three-page guide showing which western lesson replaces the corresponding lesson in your existing Planner. Use it to locate the right lesson or pattern for your planned session.

01
Module 04W

Western Foundations

Eight chapters and 32 lessons covering western tack, saddle fit, mounting, the western seat, split reins, stopping, steering, the walk and jog, transitions, turns and independent session planning.

02
Module 05W

Neck Reining And The Lope

Eight chapters and 32 lessons covering the transition from direct rein to neck rein, soft feel, one-handed work when appropriate, preparation for the lope, leads, transitions and introductory manoeuvres.

03
Practical schooling collection

The Western Patterns

Thirty-six schooling patterns with an objective, preparation level, equipment, route, riding steps, common mistakes, safety considerations and criteria for recognising success.

The Western Patterns

A reason to ride every exercise.

Each pattern gives your session a defined objective, a route to follow and an outcome to work towards.

01 / 12

In the Arena

Exercises for steering, straightness, circles, stopping, transitions and balance, using simple markers to organise your route.

Four Cones, Four Stops
The Big Circle at Walk and Jog
Change Direction Across the Arena

Ranch-Style Work

Walk the Fence Line
Loose-Rein Walk Out and Back
A Large Lope Circle in the Open
Inside every lesson

More than a list of steps.

Both western modules use a consistent one-page lesson format, helping you prepare before riding, identify what to observe during practice and review your progress.

01

The lead line

The central idea to remember from the lesson.

02

In practice

Practical actions to follow during the session.

03

What to look for

Observable signs to notice and record.

04

Where it goes wrong

Common mistakes and how to recognise them.

05

How it fits your Planner

Same Planner.
Same days. Western work.

The Western Planner Swap connects the new material to the training structure you already use.

01

Open the Swap

Find the western lesson that corresponds to the lesson in your existing Planner.

02

Read the lesson

Open the referenced module and prepare the lesson. If the plan calls for a pattern, review its route before starting the session.

03

Ride your session

Follow your planned training day using the western lesson and pattern indicated by the Swap.

Is this the right fit?

A clear starting point matters.

The Western Track follows a progression. Choose exercises according to your preparation and your horse's readiness.

This Track is for you if…

  • You already use The Clear Rein System and want to incorporate western riding.
  • You want structured lessons for tack, seat, steering, stopping and transitions.
  • You prefer practical exercises with defined routes and objectives.
  • You want to develop your skills progressively.
  • You are prepared to review your work and repeat exercises when needed.

Before you begin…

  • The Track is designed to accompany your existing Clear Rein System and Planner.
  • Module 04W assumes you can safely handle your horse from the ground and mount safely.
  • Module 05W builds on the skills taught in Module 04W.
  • The material does not replace qualified in-person instruction or professional advice.
  • Advanced competition work and cattle work are outside the scope of this Track.

Training with care comes first.

Use a correctly fitted riding helmet, suitable boots and properly fitted tack. Check footing and equipment before riding, and keep every session within the preparation of horse and rider. Stop if conditions become unsafe, steering or stopping becomes unreliable, or you suspect pain. These resources are educational and cannot assess your individual horse, equipment or riding.
